Replicating daylight with LED lighting for Sandbacks school
PROJECT: To install efficient and effective LED lighting into the rebuilt areas of the school
In Sandbacken, on Sodermalm, lies Sandbacks School, which houses several of AcadeMedia’s schools, such as Vittraskolan and Sjolins gymnasium. Now until the autumn term, ProCivita’s gymnasium, currently in Lund, Helsingborg, Malmo and Vaxjo, will also be accommodated in the same school.
To accommodate ProCivitas business, AcadeMedia had to rebuild Sandbacks School. The rebuild consisted of 20 classrooms, 10 offices and common areas, corridors and kitchens. With the new build, AcadeMedia chose for these areas to have intelligent LED lighting installed.
The old lighting meant that the average lighting intensity in the classrooms was less than 500 lux whereas the new LED lighting solution is designed to give more than 500 lux in illumination.
The Sky Panel 66 was chosen to be installed in classrooms. This LED panel provides a daylight-white light which is fully dimmable, via DALI or 10VDC, between 0-100% and is dimmed via a simple twist light switch. The luminaire has a power factor of over 120 lumens per watt and gives a high luminous flux of 4650 lumens which helps to reduce the number of luminaires from before.
In the cafe area we installed an LED panel called the Sky Panel 66 CTC. This luminaire provides the ability to change the colour temperature and dims with wireless or DALI control. In this case, wireless control was chosen in the form of a remote which is controlled by the school staff.
These luminaires are only 12mm think and can therefore be fitted with minimal space between the roof and ceiling but it can also be connected with integrated loops in the luminaire. The luminaires also provide a soft and pleasant light with a glare value (UGR) of less than 19.
The new lighting has received a lot of positive comments from students and teachers at the school.
Results compared to the previous lighting:
– >70% lower installed power
– >70% lower carbon dioxide emissions (CO2)
– >50% total cost savings
– Visibility has improved since daylight-white light makes colours and movements more easily perceived by the eye.
– The number of luminaires and total installed power decreased
