Project: To reduce energy and maintenance costs whilst increasing light levels.

The Brief -

Platinum rated for their commitment to sustainability, leading packaging manufacturers, Euro Packaging are taking another step towards a greener future by installing Low Energy Designs, LED lighting solutions at their headquarters in Birmingham. This facility focuses on manufacturing a wide selection of food and takeaway packaging for the world's leading brands. The Birmingham site also boasts a dedicated repacking facility which provides tailored, shelf ready pack formats for a wide range of retail-ready products including disposable table and partyware.

After contacting Euro Packaging we found out the company had already made the switch to LED lighting by installing LED Corn lights, however these provided poor light levels and had started failing within the first 2 years costing the business even more time and money. Once we had met with Euro Packaging, their aims were clear, to reduce energy consumption, maintenance costs and increase light levels. The company also requested to have an average of 350 lux throughout the production facility.

The Solution -

After providing Euro Packaging with a detailed lighting design and proposal which demonstrated an impressive ROI under 1.9 years, the renowned packaging company were keen to switch to Low Energy Design LED products.

The main production areas were lit using LED Corn lights. In some areas these corn lights were providing as little as 58 lux, only reaching a maximum of 116 lux in other areas. This light level, distribution and uniformity is insufficient for the work being carried out across the site.

LED corn lights were replaced with Low Energy Designs LED Sky panel's. This low-energy, LED panel provides over 4500 lumens at 5300 kelvins, simulating natural daylight which helps to make colours, movements and objects more easily perceived by the eye. Since the ceiling already has skylights allowing for natural light, we installed intelligent sensors to control the lights. Sensors which provide daylight harvesting and motion detection will increase savings on sunnier days and in areas with lowfootfall.
