Project: To reduce carbon emissions and running costs

The Brief -

Corus (now known as TATA Steel) as a company are making large steps to dramatically reduce their carbon emissions and reduce their running costs in difficult times. Therefore the company decided on a pilot project trialling a small numbers of LED lights in a variety of their plants. Based on encouraging initial results the first building at Corus MSM in Scunthorpe was commissioned using our SunRAY 10 LED fixtures.

The new factory has been specifically designed to help in maximising the light by using white or reflective walled areas where possible along with some skylights to allow natural light to illuminate the building interior.

The Solution -

The new factory operates twenty-four hours per day, seven days per week, so requires good quality lighting. We designed an intelligent LED lighting solution which enabled Corus to reduce power usage without compromising on lighting quality. In fact, the SunRAY 10 lighting units supplied have a wavelength which replicates natural daylight to blend in with the natural light coming from skylights.

These LED products with their built-in light sensors allow for automatic and independent operation, switching on and off in response to the ambient light levels coming inside the building. In addition, during low traffic periods, the lights can be configured to switch on and off or to dim in accordance with a predefined time schedule via motion detection.

The SunRAY has been replace by the LumiMOD and LumiOPTIMA.

It’s amazing when the sun shines through the skylights the lights dim or switch off automatically saving power. We can also dim them down by any amount of watts if we don’t need so much light as well as a million other options it allows us to do to save more energy. I’m genuinely impressed with the quality and uniformity of the white light from the low energy luminaires, the low maintenance will show huge cost savings for many years to come.
