Project: To reduce energy usage at the tennis centre.

The Brief -

Thongsbridge Tennis Club is considered to be one of the most dynamic, forward thinking and fastest growing clubs in Yorkshire, if not the North of England.

Established at the end of the First World War, the club has 7 acres of land originally bought from a local mill owner and consisted of 2 grass tennis courts, a wooden pavilion and an outside toilet. Over the years the club has developed with an active membership and forward looking committee. The site is shared with the cricket and bowls club although the Tennis Club owns the majority of the 7 acres.

The club has since welcomed international stars such as Ilie Nastase, Martina Hingis, Pat Cash and Britain's own Jonny Marray to its courts. The current club is doing everything in its power to enhance its community role. It maintains excellent relationships with local schools and has close ties with Thongsbridge cricket and bowling clubs.

144 x Quad 4ft fluorescent's were what lit Thongsbridge tennis courts. Each of these Quad lights were running at 144 watts, that's a total of 98,937.926 Kwatts used every year.

The Solution -

The LED lighting solution chosen to replace the Quads was the SportsOPTIMA 54M24*. The SportsOPTIMA 54M24 is the newest addition to the SportsOPTIMA family. We have incorporated 4 modules integrated within the luminaire which contain 54 LED's each. These modules can provide various distributions of light when using different optic choices over the LED's.

We installed 88 x SportsOPTIMA 54M24 which run at 210 watts each. These lights provide a day white light at 5000 kelvins which makes colours and movements more easily perceived by the eye. We equipped each of the SportsOPTIMA's with an integrated PIR sensor which provides motion detection, maintained light levels and daylight harvesting. These lights have been set to go off after 20 minutes if no motion is detected.

We set a maintained light level of 600 lux on the PPA (Principle Playing Area) which conforms to the requirements of the Lighting Tennis Association (LTA). The maintained light level will provide a consistent light output regardless of ambient (natural) light levels. Daylight Harvesting has also been activated because of the large skylights in the ceiling. The luminaire will adjust the light output according to the ambient light levels but wont exceed the set maintained light level. For example on a really sunny day the luminaire may reduce in power and light output as the natural light is meeting the lux level requirements, thus saving energy and money.

Energy Oasis installed an energy monitoring system before the new lighting and after the new lighting to monitor the energy usage of lighting and then we provided an extensive energy analysis and included a detailed lighting design that also complies to LTA (Lawn Tennis Association) standards.

The charts below show a comparison of before and after data from our energy monitoring system. Figure 1 shows a 24 hour view of energy used before and after, the old lighting hits a peak of 32kWh whilst the new lighting only hits a peak of 21kWh that's a 34% difference!

Figure 2 shows a weekly view of the costs associated with the old and new lighting. The old lighting cost £260 to run for a week, where as the new LED lighting only cost £107 a week, a 59% difference in costs.
