LED Lighting Upgrade:

Light Up Oyo, Nigeria

Project: To improve the lighting throughout Oyo State

The Brief -

On Thursday 5th September 2019, LEDCo and the Oyo State Government signed a £3 million+ contract to supply and install over 1,000 LED street lights covering 5 major routes within Ibadan the State Capital.

Similar to the Light-Up Lagos project, Oyo State will see a full turn-key solution being delivered, incorporating LED UK’s intelligent LED lighting and smart control systems combined with their state-of-the-art HESS (Hybrid Energy Storage System). This project will also include the replacement of the existing underperforming street light fittings.

Light-Up Oyo States primary purpose is to help fight crime across the state by lighting up rural and urban areas. Oyo State Governor, His Excellency Engineer Seyi Makinde says the project ‘would improve the security of lives and position the State for socio-economic drive’. The deployment of smart LED street lighting technology is a first of its kind in Oyo State in terms of the magnitude of deployment, efficiency and financial commitment.

The Solution -

Different variants of the Norrsken LED light will be used throughout this project. This high performing road and street light has been on trial in Nigeria for over two years before it was selected as being the most efficient and effective product for the project. A choice of different optical distributions and 4 lumen packages provides flexibility and allows the right amount of light to be directed exactly where it is needed. The Norrsken range reduces energy consumption, lowers carbon emissions and allows the customer to be in control of light intensity, power and remote maintenance, thus reducing costs.

The Hybrid Energy Storage System (HESS) deployed as part of this project is a scalable, power supply cycling system capable of powering an average home or large business premises by storing and using renewable or off-peak energy. This system will provide 12 hours of light every night across the state.

Low Energy Designs intelligent solutions are expected to improve environmental sustainability, increase security, provide energy savings and reduce maintenance costs. This project will also create over 80 well paid jobs for local Nigerians to assist in the installation process, administration and network configuration.

LEDCo CEO AbdulRahman Abiola-Odunowo comments “We are proud to be working with the Oyo State Government to improve the states infrastructure. By installing low energy LED lights we can help reduce energy demand and the costs associated with the up-keep and maintenance. Our smart control system allows Oyo State to have full control of the lighting all from one location. By implementing this smart technology we believe this will help improve the security and economic activity of local people living and working in Oyo State.”

This project has recently been recognised by UK Prime Minister, Boris Johnson at the 2020 UK-Africa Investment Summit, click here to watch a short video.
