The DofE announces £500M for energy efficiency upgrades in schools and colleges.

Design High School, lit using Low Energy Designs LED lights.

Eligible schools and sixth-form colleges will receive an allocation from an additional £447 million of capital funding to improve energy efficiency in 2022 to 2023. This is part of an additional £500 million of capital funding for schools and further education institutions in England.

With energy costs still on the rise there has never been a better time than now to reduce your energy to save money.

With LED lighting you can potentially save up to 80% costs when replacing old, inefficient lighting such as halogen or fluorescents which will be banned from the UK markets later this year.

On the GOV.UK website there is a list which provides the amount of money being allocated to each school. You can find this here.

What you can spend additional school capital funding on:

You must spend this funding on capital projects, prioritising projects that improve your school estate’s energy efficiency:

  • lighting

  • hot water

  • heating

  • technology

  • equipment

As a British manufacturer of LED lighting we have the expertise and knowledge to help you make the switch to LED and start saving money.

We have worked with numerous schools to help them reduce their energy consumption and costs associated. See some of our Education case studies below or head to our case studies page to see more.

Expected results compared to the previous lighting:

  1. > 70% lower installed power

  2. > 70% lower carbon dioxide emissions

Extra benefits from our LED solution:

  1. Invigorating LED lighting which has been proven to increase productivity

  2. Visibility has improved since the daylight white light makes colours and movements more easily perceived by the eye.

  3. The number of luminaires and total installed power reduced

Sherborne Girls School

Since this was a new installation there is no comparative data. However, we expect the energy and CO2 savings to have been over 40% against traditional lighting fixtures.

“The initial survey and subsequent work was carried out with the minimum of fuss and in accordance with the programme agreed. The end result is great value and it is good to have a scheme that is energy efficient and as green as possible yet gives light levels that satisfy the appropriate UK Sports England artificial lighting standards. We are very happy with the result.”

— Mike Hayton, Project Manager at Sherborne Girls School
