LED Lighting Upgrade:

JP Squash & Fitness, Blandford Forum

Expect to achieve 72% annual energy savings by switching to LED lighting.

Expected results compared to the previous lighting:

  1. Annual CO2 Savings: 1.68 Tons

  2. Annual Energy Savings: 3,783.27 kW

  3. Annual Cost Savings: £501.82

Extra benefits from our LED solution:

  1. County Club level lighting 500 lux

  2. Minimal Maintenance with 60,000 hour LED lifetime at LM80

  3. The visibility has improved since the daylight white light makes the colours, movements and objects more easily perceived by the eye.

Project: To provide a future-proof LED lighting solution in the school gym.

The Brief -

JP Sports & Fitness Club is situated close to Low Energy Designs headquarters in Blandford Forum. The club, which has been in business for over 25 years opens 7 days a week and proves extremely popular with the local community and Dorset’s County squash players.

The existing lighting in the Squash courts provided a fair amount of light compared to other squash courts on the Dorset squash circuit, however they were of poor quality and required regular maintenance. JP Sports & Fitness Club required a new lighting system that would;

- Reduce energy consumption & Carbon footprint
- Provide County Club level lighting—500 lux (maintained light levels)
- Instant switch on (to provide instant play)
- Remove costly maintenance & difficult access costs

The existing lights had started to deteriorate with many older players feeling and seeing the effects. The drivers in the fluorescent lighting were failing due to being switched on and off too regularly (every 45 minutes). The squash club tried to find Twin Fluorescent tubes to replace the broken fixtures but found it extremely difficult.

This is due to the European Commissions proposal to ‘Phase-out’ inefficient lamps. They also didn’t want to invest in the same T5 technology due to the same reasons.

The Solution -

Our SportsOPTIMA, manufactured in the UK, was the preferred choice for this application. The SportOPTIMA is a powerful, robust LED luminaire that provides a vibrant colour temperature that mimics natural daylight which helps to enhance ball visibility. The existing 10 x Twin Fluorescent lights running at 161 watts each were replaced with our 4 x SportsOPTIMA’s each running at 170 watts.

The required lux levels for Class I, international play is 750 lux, by running the SportsOPTIMA’s at full power we achieved 25% higher lux levels, exceeding the requirements for international play. The squash club only required county club level lighting so we remotely reduced the SportsOPTIMA lighting system by 35% to 110 watts per fitting to meet the required Class II Club level of over 500 lux average.
