The Brief -

Upper Shirley High School had a clear mission: create a brighter, better learning environment for its students while trimming down the energy bill. For years, the school’s corridors, classrooms and communal spaces were illuminated by tired old fluorescent lights — many of which were dim, flickering, or completely dead. Not exactly inspiring for young minds, and certainly not ideal for the school budget.

The existing fluorescent fittings were well past their prime. Poor-quality light levels, regular maintenance issues, and full-on fixture failures were becoming the norm. Some classrooms were lit unevenly, with buzzing lights overhead and dark corners where learning went to sleep.

Upper Shirley High knew it couldn’t keep patching the problem. A whole-school solution was needed, not only to create a brighter, more comfortable environment for students and staff, but to bring long-term savings and energy efficiency.

The Solution -

The school opted for a full-scale LED replacement, swapping every outdated fluorescent fitting for high-efficiency LED alternatives. Although there was no formal lux level benchmark or usage data comparison available prior to the switch, the decision was straightforward: the existing lighting was inadequate, and the upgrade would be a major step forward in both quality and cost-effectiveness.

Key highlights of the upgrade included:

• Full replacement of legacy fluorescent fixtures

• Significant increase in lux levels across all areas of the school

• Instant-on lighting with no flicker or hum

• Future-proof fittings with low maintenance requirements

For Upper Shirley High, the switch to LED wasn’t just a lighting upgrade, it was a commitment to a better learning environment and smarter resource use. While the decision was driven by necessity, the outcome delivered lasting benefits that go well beyond the light switch.

In the absence of before-and-after data, one thing is clear: the future at Upper Shirley High is looking much, much brighter.
