Project: To reduce energy but increase light levels

The Brief -

The UK's market leader in luxury vinyl flooring, Karndean Designflooring prides itself on taking action to reduce its environmental impact.

We contacted Karndean to see if we could help reduce their current energy usage and CO2 emissions with LED lighting. One of the biggest concerns to Karndean was saving energy but by installing new LED lighting they also wanted to increase their current light output. After our initial contact, we visited Karndean in Evesham to carry out an in-depth site survey. Once complete, a full energy-efficient lighting design and ROI proposal were produced. Our sales team then presented a full solution to the Karndean team.

Based on our results, we expect Karndean Designflooring to achieve over 80% energy savings however, further savings are possible through intelligent sensors which have been integrated into every LumiMOD and SmartROD.

This intelligent sensor provides Daylight Harvesting and Presence Detection. Daylight Harvesting will automatically adjust the light output according to the natural light levels the sensor receives from the roof skylights.

During commissioning we worked closely with Karndean to understand their daily operations so we could optimise the lights to best suit the needs of the staff. In the Warehouse the LumiMOD's located within the aisles were programmed to stay at full power for 1 minute then dim to 20% of the original light output if no motion is detected, if motion is still not detected within 1 minute the lights will turn off. At the end of the aisles the lights have been set to stay at full power for 1 minute then dim to 10% of the original light output until motion is detected. In open areas of the warehouse we've actually turned down the power to 80%, which will stay on for 1 minute then dim to 20% for another minute before turning off. These settings will help Karndean save even more energy on sunny days and in areas with low footfall.

Our SmartROD 80's were installed under and above the mezzanine in the warehouse. These dimmable, linear LED lights provide over 178 Lm/W using only 80w at full power and for this installation include intelligent sensors which provide the same functions as above. All of these lights have been set to stay at full power for 5 minutes then dim to 20% for a further minute before switching off, any motion detected will bring the lights back on to full power.

To prove the savings proposed we provided Karndean with energy monitoring equipment to identify the exact savings achieved on site. The equipment was installed onto row 9 of the distribution board, the area monitored was AX-AY in the warehouse which captured 6% of their existing high bay lights consumption. We monitored these areas before installation, after installation and again after commissioning for one week.

The results below show the vast reduction in energy after our LED lights were installed.

Aisle AX-AY achieved 77.98% reduction in energy from replacing 400w to 180w. After commissioning Karndean Designflooring achieved even more savings through intelligent sensors.
