Expected results compared to the previous lighting:

  1. 90.6% Annual Energy Savings

  2. 90.6% Annual CO2 Savings

Extra benefits from our LED solution:

  1. 50.9% Light Increase

  2. A lighter and fresher warehouse

  3. Higher illuminance increases the brightness and positively affects the working environment.

  4. Visibility has improved since the daylight white light makes the colours and movements more easily perceived by the eye.

Project: To reduce operational costs by changing to LED lighting

The Brief -

After contacting Wartsila in Poole, we found out that they were keen to switch their High Pressure Sodium (HPS) lighting to intelligent, low energy LED lighting. Their requirements were simple - to improve light levels throughout their facility whilst reducing energy consumption and associated costs.

One of Wartsila's main problems was failure of lighting and when they tried to source replacements or parts they couldn't find them anywhere. This is due to the original manufacturer having ceased supporting those parts and products because of the 2012 EU commission regulation on office, industry and street lighting to phase out High Pressure Sodium lights.

The Solution -

We replaced 168 x HPS lights with 93 x LED LumiOPTIMA 5218 and 101 x LED SmartROD 80.

The LumiOPTIMA is the ultimate, cost effective product for high bay applications and is a direct replacement for 250 - 400 watt lights. For this installation, we incorporated a built-in light and motion sensor. We customised these sensors to adapt to Wartsila's needs. The daylight harvesting is set to maintain 500 lux in the main factory for 45 minutes, if there is no motion detected within the 45 minutes the lights will dim down to 10% of the original light output for another 15 minutes and then turn off completely if there is still no motion detected. Daylight Harvesting adjusts the lights lux level according to the natural light levels coming through the skylights in the ceiling.

The SmartROD is a low-energy, linear LED lighting solution which provides a daylight colour temperature of 5000 kelvins and over 178 lumens per watt. To adapt to Wartsila's needs we incorporated a built-in Microwave sensor. The daylight switching, different to the daylight harvesting sensor, will provide a lux level of 300 if there is insufficient natural light. If there is no motion detected the SmartROD will maintain 300 lux for 5 minutes then dim down to 10% for 1 minute before switching off completely. Daylight Switching will only switch on the light if lux levels are lower than 300.

By incorporating intelligent sensors, Wartsila's savings could be increased when there are low periods of footfall.

Following the lengthy tender process it became very obvious Low Energy Designs were exactly who we needed to work with us on our factory refurbishment. Initial contact with the senior management team reassured us their company was professionally run offering a very robust & capable low energy lighting solution. Project timings and the environment in which the installation would take place offered challenges to all contractors but it is testimony to their teams that we completed ‘On Time In Full On Budget’ with no unexpected disruption. Interaction with their installation team at all levels was made very easy and our changes to the installation program were managed without complaint.

I spoke with Alan Parker prior to installation stating we would become a difficult customer if installation falls short of expectations or deadlines are not kept. True to Alan’s promises the project has been an absolute success which I strongly believe is normal practice for Low Energy Designs. Thank you team.
